Hyundai Verna wins Carandbike's Breakthrough Car of The Year award for 2024. Hyundai launched its latest generation compact sedan in March 2023 without the diesel engine option that had been available previously. Verna offers both manual and automatic gearbox options with a pair of petrol engines.
Verna made a strong case for itself by setting new standards in performance and technology as it entered the market. Among other models from the segment, the sedan was also the winner in carandbike's comparisons for the venerable Honda City and the Volkswagen Virtus.
The Verna presents a compelling argument for itself amidst a market increasingly favoring SUVs over hatchbacks and sedans. While its unconventional design may divide opinions, the Verna impresses within the cabin, providing generous space, comfortable seating, and an extensive array of features. High-end variants boast advanced technology like Level 2 ADAS functions, a 10.25-inch instrument screen, a 10.25-inch touchscreen, heated and ventilated front seats, a powered driver seat, Bose sound system, and more.
Although the diesel engine option has been discontinued, buyers still have the choice between a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine and a 1.5-liter turbo-petrol engine—the latter being the most potent in its segment. Both engines come with a 6-speed manual transmission, with the former offering a CVT option and the latter providing a 7-speed DCT unit.
The 1.5 NA petrol engine presents a compelling proposition with its city-friendly driving characteristics and refined performance, while the turbo-petrol engine delivers ample power to inject excitement into the driving experience.
